Light, when filtered through the hands of Isamu Noguchi, becomes architecture. It carves space from shadow, weightless and warm. The BB3-33S is a quiet monument to this philosophy—a sculpture that breathes. Conceived in 1951 at the genesis of his celebrated Akari series, this floor lamp unites three elemental materials with effortless grace. A weighty, bowl-like base of cast iron anchors the composition, from which rises a slender length of bamboo. Balanced atop this natural vertical is the shade: a luminous cloud of handmade washi paper, coaxed from the inner bark of the mulberry tree by the master craftspeople of Ozeki & Co., Japan. The shade’s form is pure Noguchi—organic, asymmetrical, seemingly caught in a moment of gentle expansion. When lit, the washi membrane transforms, glowing with a soft, diffuse warmth that Takahiko Iimura once described as “the memory of sunlight.” It is no coincidence that Noguchi called these works Akari, a term signifying light as illumination, but also as physical lightness. This is a recent edition, preserved in pristine condition. The definitive marks of authenticity are present: Noguchi’s facsimile signature and the iconic red sun-and-crescent trademark gently stamped onto the shade, a seal as poetic as the object itself.
