Item Description
There are dining chairs that simply fill a room, and then there are those that define it. This exquisite set of four Model PJ 34 “Rungstedlund” chairs, designed by the legendary Ole Wanscher for P. Jeppesen, belongs firmly to the latter category. Crafted in Denmark during the golden age of mid-century design, these chairs bear the prestigious PJ silver medallion—your hallmark of unrivaled quality and authenticity. Wanscher, a disciple of Kaare Klint, was a master of proportion. In this set, you see his genius in the sweeping, curved backrests that seem to float above the seat. The solid mahogany frames are not merely structural; they are sculptural. The wood grain reveals a deep, warm patina that only six decades of careful aging can bestow, offering a tactile richness that modern reproductions simply cannot replicate. Upholstered in the original vibrant red velvet ribcord, these chairs strike the perfect balance between academic restraint and daring flair. The textured fabric is remarkably preserved—no stains, no wear—and shifts beautifully from deep crimson to bright vermillion as light dances across the room. However, as is often the case with pieces of this vintage, the original foam has fully deteriorated. We therefore advise reupholstery before use. To ensure these icons are ready for the next six decades, we offer a full restoration service in our own atelier, carried out by our experienced craftsmen and -women. With the highest attention to the original design, we will replace the foam and refresh the upholstery, preserving every bit of the chair’s historical and monetary value. Alternatively, we are happy to arrange for local reupholstery at your convenience. The “Rungstedlund” is one of Wanscher’s most sought-after forms, praised for its ergonomic perfection—the backrest cradles the spine, offering comfort that belies its elegant silhouette. Whether surrounding a Rosewood table in a penthouse or adding a sculptural element to a minimalist interior, these chairs are ready to become heirloom pieces.
