An iconic Solar lounge chair designed by Carlo Bartoli for Arflex in 1967. A landmark of Italian Space Age design, the chair is sculpted from fiberglass and polyester resin with a high-gloss lacquer finish, resulting in a striking monolithic form that is both visually light and exceptionally comfortable. With its fluid organic silhouette and seamless construction, the Solar exemplifies the experimental spirit of the late 1960s, when new materials and manufacturing techniques redefined furniture design. Despite its bold sculptural presence, the chair offers a surprisingly relaxed seating experience, making it equally suited as a functional lounge chair or a collectible design object. An identical example is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, underscoring the Solar’s significance in the history of twentieth-century design. This example remains in fine, completely original condition. The beautiful ivory high-gloss lacquer retains its deep shine and has never been restored. There are only a few very minor chips along the edge, consistent with age and careful use, which do not detract from its outstanding presentation.
