A rare and highly distinctive Safari armchair, designed by Gian Franco Legler for Zanotta, Italy, in the 1960s. The design is characterized by its ingenious, fully dismountable wooden construction, combining a light and elegant frame with a relaxed, almost hammock-like seating experience. The back tilts, providing a very comfortable seating position for everyone. The chair features a beautifully restrained wooden structure assembled through interlocking connections, with the seat and back connected with leather belts. The armrests are constructed from canvas straps connected with a wooden dowel to the legs. Legler’s design perfectly captures the experimental spirit of Italian furniture design of the 1970s: functional, lightweight and remarkably economical in its construction, while retaining a strong sculptural presence. The ability to completely disassemble the wooden frame is an especially elegant feature of the design. With its combination of natural wood, textile and leather, the Safari has a relaxed yet sophisticated character and works beautifully in both a mid-century interior and a contemporary setting. A wonderful example of Italian Mid-Century Modern design, and an appealing piece for collectors of Zanotta and Gian Franco Legler.
