Item Description
A masterclass in restrained elegance and functional form, this PK-91 folding stool by Poul Kjærholm is a rare and highly collectible early example, produced by E. Kold Christensen, Kjærholm’s earliest and most esteemed manufacturer. Designed in 1961, the PK-91 exemplifies Kjærholm’s distinctive approach to modernism, bringing together industrial materials, precise construction, and refined craftsmanship. The stool features a beautifully proportioned cognac-colored natural leather seat stretched over a matte chrome-plated steel X-frame. Its architectural geometry and folding mechanism reference the tradition of classical campaign furniture, distilled through Kjærholm’s distinctly Scandinavian vocabulary. This example has been recently reupholstered in the finest cognac-colored natural leather by the only recognized Kjærholm upholsterer, giving the piece a fresh and exceptionally refined appearance while preserving its original character and construction. A particularly important detail is found in the steel frame. The finger-jointed corners are a defining characteristic of the early E. Kold Christensen production and distinguish these original examples from later editions. The finger joints are clearly visible at each corner of the frame, as shown in the close-up photograph. For collectors of Danish modernism, this construction detail is particularly significant and is an important feature to verify when seeking an authentic early PK-91. A superb example of Kjærholm’s early work, combining rarity, provenance, original E. Kold Christensen manufacture, and beautifully executed contemporary upholstery.
