Set of Three White Leather Bird Desk Chairs by Fabricius & Kastholm for Kill

Item Description

A rare and elegant set of three white leather desk chairs by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm for Kill International, circa 1970. Designed as the Model FK 6727, the chair is universally known as the ‘Bird’ chair, and also as the ‘Tulip’ chair, for its sculptural shell that opens like a flower or the wings of a bird in flight. The set is made up of two low-back chairs and one high-back chair, which offers a dynamic mix of heights and makes the group very effective in a boardroom, a home office or a studio. The chairs share the same sweeping, wing-like arms and the enveloping, curved shell, which cradles the sitter in a posture that is both relaxed and alert. The seats and shells are upholstered in soft white leather with fine, neat stitching, giving them a crisp and luminous appearance that contrasts beautifully with the brushed and polished metal of the bases. All three chairs have the very rare and desirable option of tilt, swivel and height adjustability, which turns what is often a lounge or conference chair into a fully functional desk chair. A lever at the side adjusts the height, and the cast aluminium five-star bases are as sculptural as the shells above them. The high-back chair is equipped with castors for easy movement, while the two low-back chairs have glides. Fabricius and Kastholm were among the leading Danish designers of their generation, known for combining the warmth of Scandinavian design with a refined, industrial precision. The Bird chair is one of their most celebrated creations, and is held in the collections of major design museums. Produced by Kill International, the chairs are marked with the Kill label. Comfortable, graphic and unmistakably modern, the set works equally well around a conference table, at a desk, or as sculptural seating in a living space.
