Item Description

A graceful and theatrical lamp by Antonio Pavia, whose sculptural brass animals brought a note of Hollywood Regency glamour and naturalistic fantasy to Italian interiors. A slender gilt brass crane, or egret, stands poised among stalks of wheat, its long neck curving elegantly downward. Its body is formed from a lustrous nautilus shell, whose pearly, iridescent interior glows in soft shades of cream and blush. The details reward close attention. The bird’s feathered chest and textured, reed-like legs are finely cast, and its feet grip the circular base with remarkable naturalism. Three ears of wheat, delicately modelled in gilt brass, rise on tall stems around it, adding rhythm and height to the composition. The polished, stepped round base anchors the piece with a warm, reflective glow. Crowning the lamp is a large heart-shaped shade of white pleated fabric, reminiscent of an anthurium leaf or a tropical palm. It diffuses the light into a soft, flattering glow, and the translucent shade contrasts beautifully with the gold tones of the brass below. Lit or unlit, the lamp is a sculpture in its own right. Pavia is known for combining brass with natural materials such as shell, producing pieces that sit between lighting, sculpture and decorative art. This floor lamp is a statement piece for a living room, entrance hall or bedroom, and pairs equally well with Hollywood Regency, Italian modernist or contemporary interiors.
