Item Description
This is a magnificent three-seater sofa designed by Johannes Andersen, one of the most distinctive voices in Danish modern design. The frame is solid Brazilian rosewood with a concealed steel core, and it is built around a repeated rhythm of slender, rounded rosewood slats. The slats run along the back and both sides, and they let the sofa read as light and almost transparent. Seen from behind, the wood and the deep red leather create a striking pattern, and the sofa looks as good in the middle of a room as against a wall. The lightness is deceptive. The sofa is quite heavy, with real weight and presence, and it is very comfortable. The loose seat and back cushions are deep and supportive, and the generously rolled armrests are upholstered in soft bordeaux leather that wraps around the posts of the frame. The round, tapered rosewood legs keep the whole piece visually grounded. The Brazilian rosewood is rich and warm, with the deep figuring and dark grain markings that make the wood so sought after. The frame is in excellent, all-original vintage condition. The bordeaux leather has developed the creases and scuffs that come with decades of use, but it remains very supple and looks remarkable for a sofa of over 60 years old. The colour is deep and full, and it gives the sofa warmth and a quiet confidence. A rare piece, it works well in a living room, library or study, and it combines easily with both Scandinavian and Italian modern design, as well as with contemporary interiors. Documents to ensure import to the US can be provided. Condition: Excellent original vintage condition for the rosewood frame. The leather shows creases and scuffs consistent with age and use but is still very supple.
