Large mahogany credenza with chrome recessed pulls, designed by Gordon Bunschaft and manufactured by De Coene for the Belgium Lambert Bank, circa 1960. The credenza features six drawers and four doors with a lock on both sides. The piece is finished on all sides so it will work as a room divider. The inside is completely veneered in oak. Since this piece was designed and made specially for the Lambert Bank it is very rare. Gordon Bunshaft was an American architect who made significant contributions to modernist architecture during the 20th century. He was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1909 and studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before joining Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in 1937, where he spent most of his career. Bunshaft’s work was characterized by clean lines, simple forms, and the innovative use of materials such as glass, steel, and concrete. Some of his notable designs include the Lever House in New York City, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. Bunshaft was recognized for his contributions to architecture with numerous awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1988, which is considered the highest honor in the field. He passed away in 1990, leaving behind a legacy of timeless designs that continue to inspire architects and designers to this day.
