Few watches look like an Ikepod, and the Megapode is the one that makes the biggest statement. Marc Newson designed the Ikepod watches together with Oliver Ike, and they were conceived the way Newson approaches any object: as a clean, sculptural form in which every detail has a purpose. The result is a watch that ignores the conventions of watchmaking and still feels completely resolved. This is the Megapode Date in brushed stainless steel, with a 46 mm case and a thickness of 17 mm. It is a large watch with real presence on the wrist, and the case’s rounded, pebble-like volume makes it surprisingly comfortable to wear. The black dial is graphic and precise. A fine white minute scale circles the edge, the luminous hands are slim and tapered, and a slender orange seconds hand adds a single flash of colour. The date window sits at six o’clock, and the dial is marked “Megapode Date-Chronometer” and “Swiss Made”. The sapphire crystal protects it from scratches, and the watch is worn on a black rubber strap, which suits the technical, almost industrial character of the design. The case back is as thoughtful as the front. A round display window shows the automatic ETA 2893-2 movement at work, and the engraving around it reads “Marc Newson Design – Ikepod Watch” with the watch’s individual number, 0404/9999. The movement has a power reserve of 44 hours, and the watch is water resistant to 50 metres. The ETA 2893-2 is a well-regarded, robust calibre, which makes servicing straightforward. The watch is guaranteed to be authentic and is in excellent working condition. Ikepod watches have become increasingly collectible, as Newson’s designs from the 1990s are now recognised as landmarks of contemporary industrial design.
