Item Description
This huge chandelier in zinc plated steel is designed according the principles of the ‘Plastic number’. The last pictures show a small version of the chandelier in the St. Benedictusberg Abbey by Dom Hans van der Laan. There are no other examples in this large size known to exist.
Son of an architect, Dom. Hans van der Laan attended the Technical University in Delft (1923-1926) to study architecture but he did not complete the program; instead he went to St. Paul’s Abbey in Oosterhout to become a monk. Van der Laan’s interest in architecture returned after the war and he became one of the leading figures of the School of Bossch, an architectural movement based on numerical relationships.
