A superb and highly decorative example of an early 20th century French shop mannequin by Siegel of Paris, one of the most celebrated names in mannequin-making of the period. This example is clearly identified by the original round paper label to the lower back, reading “Siegel Paris — Modèle Déposé — Made in France,” and was originally produced for the Parisian boutique Son Altesse. Rendered in the distinctive stylized manner of the era, the mannequin captures the elegant, idealized silhouette so characteristic of Art Deco display figures: a finely painted face with softly arched brows, almond-shaped eyes rimmed in pale blue shadow, flushed cheeks and a crisp red mouth, all set beneath a sculpted wave of dark auburn hair rendered in bold, painterly strokes. The tilted head and slender neck give the figure a poised, almost aristocratic bearing, typical of the sophisticated window displays these mannequins were designed to command. The torso and hip form is beautifully modeled. As is typical of mannequins of this type and age, the arms are absent (a normal and expected feature of the form, not a later loss), and the piece presents with wonderful, honest surface: fine craquelure to the painted finish, scattered nicks and losses consistent with a genuine century-old shop fixture, and soft old repairs — all of which add to, rather than detract from, its considerable character and authenticity. A rare and evocative piece of Parisian fashion history, ideal as a striking decorative object or sculptural display piece in a boutique, dressing room, or design-forward interior.
