Item Description
Vintage African batik fabric artwork with a subtle Mid-Century Modern influence. Stretched on a custom-made wooden framework and in good condition, with no tears. Signed in the lower right corner. Hand-dyed in the heart of Gambia and attributed to the Drammeh tradition, this piece reflects a long-standing and respected textile heritage. Batik is a timeless technique in which wax is used to resist dye, allowing layered compositions and intricate patterns to emerge. Traditionally, these designs often carry symbolic meaning and reflect social or cultural narratives. Gambian batik is known for its expressive and painterly quality, often depicting scenes of daily life—such as markets, fishing, and village life—alongside nature, animals, and abstract or geometric motifs. The use of strong, warm colours gives the work its distinctive character. A unique fusion of African soul and contemporary aesthetic.
