Theo Ruth for Artifort, ‘Congo’ lounge chairs in black lacquered wood and checkered yellow fabric, The Netherlands, 1952. These chairs have a unique construction, forced by tension and gravity. The back and seating are two separate elements that fit together to form the chair. This design was inspired by African chairs, hence the name “Congo”. Theo Ruth was an interior and furniture designer whose most famous design was his 1952 Congo chair based on innovative tension construction. After joining Artifort in 1936 (then named Wagemans & Van Tuinen) as their primary furniture designer, he became integral to the development of Artifort’s design department, bringing in other designers such as Geoffrey Harcourt, Gerrit Rietveld, and Pierre Paulin.
