A wonderful matching set of four “Lily” (model 3108) chairs, designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen. Each chair is stamped to the underside with the original Fritz Hansen manufacturer’s mark, confirming “Made in Denmark,” the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control seal, and a date stamp of 1971, giving this set a firm production date of over fifty years ago. The “Lily” is among the most sculptural of Jacobsen’s plywood chair designs — a single, continuous sheet of molded teak-veneered plywood swept into a dramatic, wing-like silhouette that flares outward at both the crest of the backrest and the front of the seat, with a deep waisted cinch at the lumbar that gives the chair its instantly recognizable, almost anthropomorphic profile. The shell sits on slender, matte chromed tubular steel legs, a hallmark of Jacobsen’s structural economy and one of the defining details of Scandinavian furniture design at its peak. Each chair retains its rich, original teak veneer with a warm, deepening patina built up over decades of use. As a genuine vintage set of this age, the chairs show honest, well-earned wear: light surface marks, small veneer touch-ups and repairs, and scattered staining consistent with half a century of careful domestic use — none of which detracts from the sculptural presence or structural soundness of the chairs, and all of which speaks to their authenticity as a lived-with, original set rather than a later reproduction.
