Item Description

This is a compact Scandinavian sofa from the 1940s, a one-off piece with the quiet confidence of the period. The silhouette is gently curved and sculptural. The back wraps into low, sloping arms that curve toward the front, and a row of fabric-covered buttons gives the backrest a tailored look. The sofa sits on four tapered maple legs, which lighten the whole form and give it an elegant, almost furniture-like character. It is made in the traditional, high-end way. The seat is supported by woven straps, and the interior is filled with horsehair, as in the best cabinetmakers’ and upholsterers’ work of its day. This is construction meant to last, and it is the reason the sofa has kept its shape and its comfort. The seat has a loose cushion with a crisp, piped edge. The original upholstery is a dark grey-brown, a heavy, textured fabric with a fine woven structure that shifts subtly between charcoal and brown depending on the light. The fabric is still wonderful and fully functional, and its natural patina suits the age of the piece. Together with the pale maple legs, it gives the sofa a restrained, warm contrast. With a width of 144 cm, this sofa is the right size for small spaces. It works as a two-seater in a living room, at the foot of a bed, in a hallway or in an office, and it fits equally well with vintage and contemporary interiors. Its low seat height and shallow depth give it a relaxed, light presence. Condition: Good original vintage condition. The original upholstery is intact and fully functional, with a natural patina consistent with age. Dimensions: Width: 144 cm (56.7 in) Depth: 69 cm (27.2 in) Height: 71 cm (28 in) Seat height: 39 cm (15.4 in)
