Item Description
The Masterpiece. The PK 61 is the definitive minimalist coffee table—a floating plane of stone suspended on a knife-edge steel frame. Designed by Paul Kjærholm in 1956 and produced by E. Kold Christensen, it represents Danish modernism at its most architectonic. No wood. No ornament. Only material honesty. This Piece — The Early Edition. What you are looking at is not a later reissue or a 1960s production piece. This PK 61 was purchased in 1957, making it one of the very first examples to leave the workshop. The differences are subtle to the untrained eye, but decisive to a collector: · The frame: Matte chrome steel with a slightly thinner, more delicate finish than later pieces. You will find light surface rust in spots—not damage, but evidence. This is the hallmark of earliest production, before the finish was thickened and standardized in the 1960s. · The stamp: Later frames were stamped. This one is not. That absence is its signature. The Top. A truly spectacular slab of dark brown marble—deep, moody, and richly veined with subtle amber and charcoal threads. The stone has been lovingly preserved, showing only the gentle wear consistent with six decades of use. It sits flush and level, with no cracks or heavy chips. Condition. Vintage, very good. The marble is exceptional. The frame remains straight and structurally perfect. The light oxidation on the steel has been left untouched to preserve authenticity, but a new owner may choose gentle conservation if desired. Why It Matters. A 1957 Kjærholm is not simply a table. It is a document. This piece captures the raw, unpolished edge of a master furniture maker finding his language. Few examples from this first year survive. Fewer still come to market.
