Item Description
A striking example of Charlotte Perriand’s celebrated Nuage (“Cloud”) shelving system, produced by Cassina and stamped with its edition number (No. 695) and Perriand’s own signature on the side of the bottom shelf — clear confirmation of an authentic, early production piece. Originally conceived by Perriand in 1956 for her own Paris apartment, the Nuage system is one of the great icons of postwar French design: a modular composition of natural oak shelving punctuated by sliding plastic panels in bold primary and secondary colors — here in blue, green, yellow and red — set against black-lacquered verticals. The result is a rhythmic, almost painterly play of volume and color that reads as much as a work of abstract art as it does functional storage. The sliding doors run on slim aluminum track inlays, a hallmark detail of Perriand’s engineering-minded approach to furniture design, allowing each compartment to be opened and closed with quiet precision decades after manufacture. This unit is in very good condition overall, presenting with only minor, honest signs of prior use consistent with its age and history. One interior rear panel, positioned behind a sliding door, has three drilled holes — a legacy of the piece once housing stereo equipment in that compartment. This is invisible when the door is closed and does not affect the structural integrity of the piece; should the new owner prefer, we are able to source and fit a replacement rear panel at no additional cost. A rare opportunity to acquire a numbered and signed example of one of Perriand’s most iconic and sought-after designs — sculptural, versatile, and as relevant to contemporary interiors today as it was on its debut. The piece is professionally packed and ready to ship. The Jean Prouvé Chaise Tout Bois is photographed for size reference only and not included, it is available separately.
