Chandelier with Crystal and Amber Glass Shades by Carl Fagerlund for Orrefors

Item Description

This three-arm chandelier was designed by Carl Fagerlund for Orrefors, the Swedish glassworks known for its crystal. Three cylindrical glass shades hang from a slim brass frame. Each shade is made of heavy, clear crystal with a rippled, hand-worked surface that looks like moving water, and each has a warm amber glass layer inside. Lit, the amber glows through the clear crystal and the textured surface breaks the light into shifting, golden patterns. Unlit, the shades are clear and glittering, with a hint of amber in the depth of the glass. The frame is kept deliberately simple and architectural. A round brass canopy and a slender rod carry a central brass cylinder, from which three arms reach out horizontally to the cylindrical lamp holders. The proportions are compact and balanced, and the clean geometry lets the glass take centre stage. It is a good example of Swedish midcentury lighting, where craftsmanship and understatement matter more than ornament. The brass has developed a warm, natural patina over the decades, which suits the golden tone of the glass. At this scale the chandelier is a good fit for a dining room, hallway, bedroom, or a smaller living space, and it sits easily with both vintage and contemporary interiors. The wiring has been checked by our expert and is suitable for use in the USA. Condition: Very good vintage condition. The brass shows a natural patina, and the glass shades are intact.
