Item Description

Two icons of Dutch and Danish design meet in this signed, limited edition chair by Maarten Baas. Arne Jacobsen’s Series 7, designed in 1955 for Fritz Hansen, is among the best-selling and most recognizable chairs of the 20th century, a masterpiece of moulded plywood whose flowing, single-shell form has become a symbol of modern design. Here, Baas takes that familiar classic and gives it a new and unexpected life. Born in 1978, Baas rose to prominence with his graduation work at the Design Academy Eindhoven, and has since become one of the most original voices in contemporary design. His practice is built on a distinctive tension between reverence for design history and a willingness to challenge it. By transforming an object everyone thinks they know, he invites the viewer to look again at the chair and at the idea of the design icon itself. This example is signed by the artist and produced in a limited edition, making it a collectible work that sits on the line between design object and sculpture. It will make a striking statement in a living space, dining room or gallery-style interior, and is a natural companion to other works of contemporary Dutch design.
