A superb example of Finn Juhl’s celebrated “Diplomat” armchair, produced by France & Søn in Denmark, retaining its original manufacturer’s label to the underside of the seat frame confirming both maker and origin. Designed originally for the Danish Foreign Ministry, the Diplomat chair is one of Juhl’s most refined expressions of Scandinavian modernism: a high, gently curved backrest for comfortable support, paired with sculptural armrests that appear almost carved from a single gesture, their subtly winged, hand-shaped tips a hallmark of Juhl’s organic, sculptural approach to furniture design. The frame is executed in beautifully grained rosewood, with tapered, slightly splayed legs and exposed joinery to the seat rail that speaks to the exceptional quality of Danish cabinetmaking at its peak. The chair retains its original blue upholstery, showing lovely honest patina and wear consistent with age, and the rosewood frame displays a rich, warm color with the natural grain variation so prized in vintage rosewood furniture. The floating seat and back, a signature Juhl device, allow the upholstered elements to appear almost suspended within the wooden frame, reinforcing the chair’s light, sculptural presence.
