Item Description
A striking vintage La Fonda armchair by Charles and Ray Eames, dating from the 1970s. Designed as part of the celebrated La Fonda series, this chair combines the sculptural form of a molded fiberglass shell with generous upholstery and a highly functional, adjustable base. The chair features an off-white molded fiberglass shell upholstered in a warm brown hopsack fabric. The upholstery is in good vintage condition, with no tears or noticeable stains, and retains its original character and rich patina. As all upholstered fiberglass chairs of the era the fabric is loosened from the foam. The foam is still soft and resilient. The chair is fitted with its distinctive rolling five-star base with casters and a height-adjustable mechanism operated by a threaded spindle, allowing the seat height to be precisely adjusted. The underside of the chair is marked with the Herman Miller logo, confirming its original manufacture by Herman Miller. The combination of the original marking, fiberglass shell, upholstered construction and distinctive adjustable rolling base makes this an especially appealing example for collectors of Eames furniture. The contrast between the warm brown upholstery, off-white fiberglass shell and elegant metal base gives the chair a refined and understated presence, characteristic of the Eames approach to functional modern design. This example comes from an important Dutch collection of modern art and design, providing distinguished provenance to this highly collectible piece.
