Item Description
A superb example of the LC5, produced by Cassina under license and stamped with the maker’s edition mark, model number LC5, serial number F01191, and the facsimile signature of Le Corbusier to the chrome frame — full confirmation of an authentic, officially licensed piece. Originally conceived in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand as part of their revolutionary “Équipement de l’habitation” furniture program, the LC5 distills the trio’s radical vision of the tubular steel frame as a piece of furniture in its own right — a “container” for cushions rather than a traditional upholstered structure. The polished chrome base, with its signature cantilevered sled-like legs, appears almost to float the deep, boxy seat and back cushions above the floor, giving the piece a striking sense of lightness despite its substantial, architectural presence. This example is upholstered in rich black leather, with plump, generously proportioned cushions that offer excellent comfort alongside the design’s iconic geometric purity. The seat and back cushions are attached to the rear frame and can swivel backward allowing it to double effectively as a daybed, staying true to the flexible, modular spirit of the original design. Very exceptional, this version is no longer made by Cassina. The piece presents in excellent condition, with the leather supple and unmarked and the chrome frame retaining a bright, clean polish throughout. A cornerstone of twentieth-century furniture design and one of the most instantly recognizable icons of modernism — equally at home in a considered residential interior, a design-forward office, or a gallery setting.
