Item Description

An iconic design by Osvaldo Borsani, the D70 sofa for Tecno stands as a landmark of Italian mid-century innovation, distinguished by its patented adjustable backrest mechanism and refined architectural presence. Conceived in the 1950s, the model remains a benchmark of functional modernism and mechanical elegance. This particular example was ordered new from Tecno in 2006 and upholstered in exquisite Poltrona Frau leather in cognac (Tecno color no. 2201). The same “Cuoio” leather is famously used in Ferrari interiors, reinforcing the sofa’s inherent dialogue with automotive design. Borsani’s conception of the D70 was notably inspired by car seating—an influence evident in its ergonomic adaptability and structural clarity. The use of Ferrari-specification leather creates a compelling and authentic correspondence between concept and material. The sofa’s defining feature is its ingeniously engineered backrest system, allowing each side to be independently adjusted to multiple positions, transforming the piece from a formal sofa into relaxed chaise-like configurations. The exposed metal mechanism is both functional and aesthetic, articulating Tecno’s commitment to technical precision. The cognac leather has developed a subtle, elegant character while remaining in excellent condition. The sofa has been used sparingly and carefully since acquisition, preserving the integrity of both upholstery and structure. A rare opportunity to acquire a vintage D70 executed in its original, high-grade Poltrona Frau leather—an exceptional combination of Italian design heritage, engineering sophistication, and automotive-level material quality.
